Set in Singapore, Ilo Ilo chronicles the relationship between the Lim family and their newly arrived maid, Teresa. Like many other Filipino women, she has come to this city in search of a better life. Her presence in the family worsens their already strained relationship. Jiale, the young and troublesome son, starts to form a unique bond with Teresa, who soon becomes an unspoken part of the family. This is 1997 and the Asian Financial Crisis is beginning to be felt in the region.

Watched ILO ILO 爸妈不在家 with Jiewei. This is a true life film of the director Anthony Chen who was cared for by an Ilonggo maid, named Terry. With the help of Bombo Radio, the director was able to reunite and brought her to the gala premiere.

Ever wondered why the film is named ILO ILO? I was pretty curious and did research on it. ILO ILO is a province in Philippines which was closely related to Terry hometown. Thus, I think that is how He decided to name this film.

The story plot was simple and predictable. I thought it relate closely to one family lifestyle in Singapore. Though there wasn't much climax but it show the importance of learning to give and love in order to have acceptance from loved ones. Great to see some humor element being injected as well. It ended quite abruptly but I felt touched at the end of the show.
