The Other Side of the Door Movie Review

A dramatic horror thriller about a couple living in India who are searching for their missing son, Oliver, who was believed to have been dead, but who returns to terrorize their lives, especially that of his adorable and happy little sister, Lucy.

Watched The Other Side of the Door with Jiewei on Thursday afternoon at Johor Bahru City Square Cathay Cineplex.

Personally, I feel that the story is direct with a simple plot. The show taps into our primal fears where only the innocent ones can see, such as the dog and child. This uncertainty heightens the suspense of the show.

Though a predictable film with the usual horror flick, the build up is carefully injected with good flow. There are many intense moment which kept me on the edge of my seat. Towards the finale, there is a slight twist that is least expected.

[Media Invitation] KOKOMAMA Market Place

Conveniently situated in the heart of Singapore at Dhoby Ghaut, where it is housed at the Singapore School of the Arts (SOTA) building. An adventurous business by the Chew siblings behind 77th Street, KOKOMAMA aims to present a wide range of international fusion dishes to Singaporean palate, and hence, the “Market Place”.

A hip fusion cafe that sells different varieties of food and beverages - french bakery, chilli crab/curry/clam chowder bread bowls, rice bowls, coffee (latte etc), traditional kopi/teh and dessert such as waffles and korean bingsu!

Salted Egg Croissant

Peanut Butter Croissant

 Custard Croissant

Honestly, each kokolava croissant has its own distinct flavour and taste just as good. It depends which is more to your liking, in order to enjoy most out of it. For me, it would be Custard Croissant > Salted Egg Croissant > Peanut Butter Croissant. Good that the croissant is flaky with crisp exterior. The filling is light and not too flavourful.

Next, we tasted the fusion pizzas - Chilli Crab, Salted Egg & Smoked Duck. Particularly, I adore the Chilli Crab one the most as it goes along best with the well-toasted flatbread. And yes, they are pretty generous in their fillings.

Salted Egg Seafood Pasta

Salted egg seafood pasta that is rather tasty and classic on its own! The texture of its pasta could have been better though.

 Mango Bingu

 Matcha Bingu

Yogurt Fruity Bingsu

Particularly, I enjoyed the mango bingsu for its overall appeal and texture. Matcha bingsu tasted pretty distinct though its texture of its shaved iced could have been better. Yogurt Fruity Bingsu has a pretty presentation that is Instagram worthy. However, I could hardly taste the sourness of its yogurt. The fruits topping certainly help to make the experience better.

The Mermaid 美人鱼 Movie Review

Hin’s real estate project involved reclamation of the sea, threatening the livelihood of the residents who relied on the sea to make a living. Bearing family secrets, Shan was dispatched to stop Hin. During their encounters, they fall in love with each other. Even though Hin stopped the reclamation plan out of his love for Shan, Shan got injured in an accident and vanished into the sea.

Watched The Mermaid 美人鱼 with my mentee on Tuesday evening after work! Honestly, the trailer did not appeal to me with its lame scenes. I only decided to catch it since there are quite a number of good reviews.

Personally, I feel that the film is entertaining and classic on its own. Initially, the story may appear lame without much development. However, it got better with its story build up that is commendable. The flow is nicely depicted with many humorous scenes. However, some of it appear 'trying too hard' for me.

It educated viewers on the importance of marine life and our living environment. The message bring across is meaningful and easy for one to relate. Last but not least, money is not everything!

Marry Me, or Not? 必娶女人 Drama Review

Opposites attract, but can a lasting relationship survive between two very different people? Cai Huan Zhen works in the tourism industry and is a top performer at her job. She is a meticulous planner and plans out every detail of her professional and personal life. She is a romantic and strives to find true love in every relationship. On the other hand, He Meng is a successful lawyer who specializes in helping his clients through messy divorces. He has never lost a case, but a side effect of his profession is that he doesn’t believe in a happy marriage. He wants to avoid the entanglements of marriage altogether in his personal life. Could romance survive with this unlikely couple?

Finished watching Marry Me, or Not? 必娶女人. Partially, I am watching this series because of Roy Chiu and Joanne Tseng - Favourite celebrities in my list.

Personally, I feel that this drama has a refreshing plot which educated me about relationship. The story flow well though its development could have been fine-tuned. Honestly, I learn many different aspect of it. It also trigger certain memories one may encounter during high school. The humorous and touching scenes are nicely injected.

Kudos to Roy Chiu and Alice Ko acting capabilities! I think they did well in their craft. The emotions put forth are natural. The finale may appear predictable but I enjoyed it! A happy ending! As a whole, a rather enjoyable romance drama to catch.

Deadpool Movie Review

Based upon Marvel Comics' most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Watched Deadpool with Trois yesterday evening after work! This film reminds me of kick-ass, a entertaining super-hero show perhaps? I was amazed to only know that while watching it, since I am neither a marvel fan nor catch the trailer.

Personally, I feel that the show was compact and entertaining that stands on its own. The story flow appear slightly messy and could have been fine-tuned. However, I got to affirm the effort made for its interesting way of presenting it. The fight scenes are nicely injected as well!

The plot itself was predictable and rather weak without much for me to anticipate. The many humourous scenes certainly liven me up as a viewer. However, some of it appear 'trying too hard'.

A show more for the marvel fans out there! Honestly, the show did not work that well for me.

Long Long Time Ago 我们的故事 Movie Review

LONG LONG TIME AGO tells a story from 1965 to early 1970s, following the protagonist of the story, Zhao Di (plays by Aileen Tan), and her family as they journey through the years from Kampong to HDB, which parallels with Singapore’s early growth as a nation. With Zhao Di’s indomitable spirit, and with the help of her family, they went through adversities, witnessed the changes through the years, and accompanied every step of the nation’s growth in its early years.

Watched Long Long Time Ago 我们的故事 with my mum.

Personally, I feel that the story is rather classic on its own. Initially, the plot may appear rather dull without much to anticipate. However, it got better with its story build up that is commendable. The flow is good though certain areas could have been further developed.

Basically, a film about the history of Singapore. A journey back to the past which educated me about kampong life and its culture, one that I never experience before. It is also interesting to see a drastic comparison from the past to the present. Kudos to Aileen Tan, Mark Lee and Suhaimi acting capabilities. I think they did rather well in their craft!

Honestly, I am looking forward to the sequel of this film because it seems more promising to me. It will be out in March! Most likely, I will be catching it.
